Replacing the oil filter on the pre B18 Volvos is becoming increasingly difficult. Generally, you have to find and order the proper canister type filter element, then wait for its arrival, as well as pay the postage. These filters are getting more expensive as well as harder to find! Some available filters are NOS (new old stock) and the filtering media, glues, etc. may be far beyond their shelf life, sometimes by decades!

There are several advantages to adapting the B16 engine to a spin-on type filter!

- Filters are readily available, cheaper and new stock. The adapter uses the same spin-on filter as the B18/20 engines use!

- A good quality modern spin-on filter will include an anti 'drain back' valve that will retain oil in the filter and galleys, thus getting oil to your engine quicker on initial start up. This is especially noticeable during the first morning start up. Nearly all modern filters also incorporate a bypass valve within the filter.

- Modern, quality filters do a much better job of cleaning small particles from the oil than their older counterparts. Some are, of course, better than others at removing abrasives in the below 25 micron size range. With our adapter you can choose just how good a filter you need! Most "regular" modern filters will catch nearly all particles 25 microns or larger - while the "better" quality oil filters use synthetic media, micro glass fiber or extremely fine metal mesh. Better quality filters can now remove 95% or more of 5-7 micron particles. Stick on magnetic particle traps are also effective when used with a spin-on filter, the old canister housing is far too thick to let them be effective in trapping and retaining ferrous particles in the oil flow.

- More convenient filter changes, cleaning the 'gunk' out of a canister housing before replacing the cartridge was never any fun!

- On the Volvo B16 engine, the smaller filter diameter of the spin-on filters allows the removal and replacement of the starter motor without removing the filter.
